Although I’ve explored many new forms, clothed them in a variety of new
techniques, and given them a place in the world, that’s not what it’s all
about for me. It’s about visiting those places within myself that are wiser,
clearer and more creative than my everyday self. When I’m there, I never feel
alone, abandoned to my own limitations.
The creations that are the result of time spent in this place are what I’ve
shared with my students in the past, but teaching specific techniques through
demonstrations is no longer enough. I now look for ways to communicate the
process out of which the end product arises. I’m hoping that sharing the
entire process will inspire the hidden wise and creative selves waiting in
each student to make themselves known.
Since I’ve been teaching small week-long classes in France, I’ve concentrated
more on coaching students individually. I not only believe that everyone’s work
bears their signature, no mater how hidden; I believe it’s possible to talk about
it in a way that helps the artist to read their signature in the visual language
in which it’s expressed. Once verbalized, it’s easier to develop or change what
the eye sees.
Now that La Cascade, our creative retreat in France, is completed, I spend my
summers there along with other teachers that have been invited to teach classes
in painting, book arts, mixed media jewelry, and polymer clay. The week-long
classes in a magical setting encourage students to alter their habitual ways
of experiencing themselves and their art.
